Interlude 5

Interlude 5

There is a place that is not a place. Shore without sea, under stars without sky. There is a moment of silence, stillness at turn of tide, between final ebb of world and first surge of next. Upon this shore of non-existence, three figures appear in timeless triangle, hunched and eternal, each before a great stone bowl, tethered to the ground by the chains of reality.

The first has skin like cracked riverbed, hands gnarled as ancient roots. Her gaze is heavy; where it falls, mist in her bowl thickens and slows, possibilities coalescing like dew on spider's web. The second figure’s eyes are chips of flint, sharp, penetrating. Her hands are never still, twitching as she makes sharp, sudden movements. With a violent flick of her wrist above the bowl, she tears at the vapours without contact, sending chaotic ripples through the whole. The third is creature of shadow and suggestion, her face a pattern the eye cannot hold. She never touches the mist, but hums low, dissonant tune, and vibrations cause patterns in her bowl to dance and reform, weaving and unweaving themselves in time with the sound.

From within each dark, unadorned bowl, pearlescent mist coils and writhes, living vapour that holds echoes of worlds. It is possibility itself, swirling with potential of every choice made and unmade. The mist shimmers with faint colour of souls and deep light of raw power, a chaotic soup of destiny being served.

Their work is constant, silent conversation. Sharp stir from the second is softened by heavy gaze of the first. Chaotic ripples are given structure by humming of the third. They act not in sequence, but in concert—a system of perfect, inscrutable balance. One ripple spreads, image flares into focus across all three bowls at once, fleeting window into world of wind, and salt, and sail.

But the concert is not always gentle melody; it is often cacophony of competing wills. The second will plunge her hands deep, twisting mist into maelstrom that threatens to shred delicate thread of fate—a ship, perhaps, caught in sudden squall. In response, the third’s hum will rise in pitch, a sharp, cutting note that attempts to weave safe channel through chaos. The first will then fix her heavy gaze upon the thread itself, lending it impossible weight and resilience, forcing it to hold fast against tearing winds.

This is their eternal game, contest of wills played out in vapour and light. No single impulse ever allowed complete triumph. Chaos met with order, intention with inertia, every possibility tested, strained, and contested before becoming single truth. They are adversaries as much as partners, each ensuring the others do not pull tapestry of reality too far in any one direction.

And now, their collective attention fixes. Within swirling mists of all three bowls, the same scene unfolds. Vapours bleed with colour, pools of raw power vying for dominance: blinding white and velvet black; smouldering crimson and deep sapphire; rich umber and stormy grey; luminous violet and vibrant emerald. And scattered among these warring hues, eight small lights have appeared upon the waters. Insignificant sparks in grand design, yet they pull at threads of destiny with force far greater than size would suggest.

For something has begun to unravel. A great thread from within, woven with power of gods and poison of certainty, seeks to unmake world's design. It pulls and tears at the balance, threatening to bleach all colour from the mist, leaving only stark white and bottomless black. And so the three, for the first time in an age, find shared purpose, if not shared path. Two gaze upon six, nurturing them as world's best hope; one watches two, for in chaos hides opportunity. They nudge and guide their chosen sparks, granting impossible luck, steering with unseen currents, for in these tiny, flickering flames, they have placed the world's hope to remain unfinished and the game played on.
